We hail our Alma Mater, and we sing her praise today as we pledge our loyal tribute to her unswerving way. Bishop McGuinness High School, your colors white and blue. Will lighten every shadow, as their spirit shines through. The white will shine so bright our hope to keep alight, the blue will anchor faith and conquer feat; the colors that will gleam will nourish every dream. And strenghten every wish to be fulfilled. Bishop McGuinness High School, where we've lived and learned to know God's love will e'er protect us as through life we will go.
History Of Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School.
A substantial gift from Mrs. Mary Ann Robertson of New York City to Raleigh's Bishop Waters made possible the establishment of a girls' college preparatory school, the Villa Marie Anna Academy, in 1954 on which is now Country Club Road in west Winston-Salem. The Villa's initial enrollment was a total of five students; however, the school began to experience substantial growth with the admission of boys in 1956. The Sisters of St. Joseph of Chestnut Hill (five in number, led by Principal Sister Eileen Patrice) were responsible for the entire high school program, and under the care, two classes graduated from the Villa before its closure in 1959 to make way for the new inter-parochial high school, named for Raleigh's Bishop Eugene J. McGuinness. It opened its doors on September 8, 1959. The faith and determination of the Sisters came to fruition with the building of this new school, the Villa's successor, which enrolled 96 students to start.
"Phase I" gave way to "Phase II" in 1959. In August of 2001, "Phase III" of the school's history began at its new central Triad 42-acre site, with a plant designed to eventually house more than 800 students in a state-of-the-art facility. Faithful to its education in the central Triad, Bishop McGuinness will continue to offer the very best in Catholic High School opportunity for generations to come.

Varsity Lady Villains Coaching History.
Below are pictures of the Lady Villains first-ever coach, Sarah Kirby, who spoke at our Alumni Game function on December 21, 2013. Also a picture of Coach Kirby with Coach Marc Pruitt, the head coach of the Lady Villains before Coach Robinson came to the program.
Coach Kirby passed away on January 5, 2016.

Why are we called the Villains?
Our school mascot, "The Villain", comes from our early roots at the Villa Marie Anna Academy. The school motto, "Praesis ut Prosis" is taken from the seal of the late Bishop McGuinness and serves as a challenge for all who would desire "to excel that they might better serve".

- Many want to be the captain. Few want to lead. Many want to go out for the coin toss & get their name in paper. Few want to die to self, invisibly." - Anonymous
A group of wolves: The 3 in front are old & sick, they walk in front to set the pace of the running group lest they get left behind. The next 5 are the strongest & best, they are tasked to protect the front side if there is an attack. The pack in the middle are always protected from any attack. The 5 behind them are also among the strongest & best; they are tasked to protect the back side if there is an attack. The last one is the LEADER. He ensures that no one is left behind. He keeps the pack unified and on the same path. He is always ready to run in any direction to protect & serves as the 'bodyguard' to the entire group. Just in case y'all wanted to know what it really means to be a leader.

Varsity Lady Villains Winning Playoff Winning Streak Ends At 54 Straight - March 2, 2015.
3278 Straight Days As A State Champ, 248-40 From 2005-2014, 9 Straight State Championships - An End? Or A New Beginning....
Scott Sexton/Winston-Salem Journal HAYESVILLE — Just over the entrance to the visitors’ locker room hang six championship banners won by the Hayesville High School girls from 1988 through 1993.
And coming out of that locker room a few minutes before 6 on Monday night was Bishop McGuinness, the program that bettered that streak by winning nine in a row from 2006 through ’14.
Two hours later, Hayesville ended that streak by beating the Villains 64-41 in the second round of the NCHSAA 1-A playoffs.
“If it had to end — and it did some day — there is no better place to do it than here with the history of this program,” Coach Brian Robinson of the Villains said. “It’s a rich history, and a very classy program.”
Hayesville was led by Stephanie Patton, with 26 points, and Amanda Thompson, who scored 25.
Tia Cappuccio had 17 points for McGuinness; Danielle Nieters added 13.
“I feel like rebounding was the difference,” Coach Chad McClure of Hayesville said. “Last year (a 57-49 Villains win in the regionals) they outrebounded us 37-17. I stressed to the girls that if we could control the boards, we could win this game.”
Both teams started sluggishly. McGuinness missed its first six shots from the field and fell behind 5-0 after 3 minutes. Freshman Emily Elliot then hit two 3-pointers to pull the Villains back into the game.
A layup by Nieters early in the second quarter gave the Villains an 11-9 lead at the 7:48 mark that would be their last. Hayesville started to dominate the boards and slowly began to pull away.
A 27-18 halftime lead mushroomed to 47-29 at the end of three quarters, effectively ending the Villains’ season. The fourth quarter quickly turned into a game of keep away for Hayesville and a desperate fouling gambit by McGuinness that repeatedly sent Hayesville’s best shooters to the free-throw line.
“Honestly, I think we just ran out of gas,” Robinson said. “We put so much energy into our last game Saturday (a 44-35 win over conference rival Atkins), I just don’t think we had anything left.
“For 32 minutes in that game we put everything together. We just couldn’t put together back-to-back games like that, the way you need to in the playoffs.”
Robinson was subdued and the locker room behind him deathly silent. What do you say to players who felt the weight of history on them all season long?
“I told them how proud I was of them,” Robinson said. “It was amazing what we did, things no other program in the history of the state has done. We won 54 of 55 playoff games over 10 years. That’s pretty good.”
The significance of the evening was not lost on McClure.
“What (the Villains) accomplished, you can’t say enough about them,” he said. ”They’re a classy program, well-coached, and they do things the right way.”
He smiled when asked if he’d thought much about what it might mean to end McGuinness’ run.
“Well, my dad was the coach when they won all those titles so it was kind of hard not to notice,” McClure said. “Ask him.”
Like his son, Darryl McClure first praised McGuinness before considering what the win meant to the school and the town.
“Well, if their streak had to end, I’m glad it was to us,” he said.

Being A Great Captain Requires You To Be A Great Follower & Teammate First.
by Brad Lomenick
As LEADERS, it’s equally important for us to know how to FOLLOW as it is how to LEAD. In fact, many believe to be a good leader, you must first be a great follower. And continue to follow well as you continue to lead well. I would suggest that great leaders are equally in tune with how to follow well, as how to lead well. So here are a few thoughts on following:
1. Good followers are finishers. They get the job done. Take projects across the finish line. Make things happen. On their own.
2. Good followers anticipate. They understand what needs to be done next before having to be told, and are always looking for ways to make the process better.
3. Good followers criticize in private, and praise in public. Enough said on that.
4. Good followers are trustworthy. When given an assignment, a leader can be assured that it will get done. Dependable. This is incredibly important.
5. Good followers are vision copycats. They take on, embody and live out the vision and mission of their leader, and of the organization, helping set and model a cultural standard.
6. Good followers make their leader better. They push their leader, and know how to lead up appropriately and intentionally.
7. Good followers lead themselves. They don’t need to be managed, and aren’t needy. They are self aware, and don’t need all the attention from the leader.
8. Good followers are principled. They are humble, disciplined and have complete integrity. They know it’s not about them, and what you see is what you get.
